Feeding the Hungry
Houston North Majlis
“And they feed, for love of Him, the poor, the orphan, and the prisoner” [76:9].

Research from the USDA found that 14.9% of American households were food insecure during at least a part of 2011, with 5.7% suffering from very low food security. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Annual Homeless Assessment Report, as of 2018 there were around 553,000 homeless people in the United States on a given night.
In the verse of the Holy Qur’an quoted above, Allah Almighty tells us that virtuous people feed the poor. Following the Qur’anic commandment, Houston North Ansar teamed up with Humanity First to feed the hungry and homeless in Downtown Houston in the month of September. More than 100 care packages were prepared. Care packages included hot sandwiches, fresh fruit, and cold-water bottles. Many Ansar took the time out of their busy schedules to come and join this noble effort in the very hot summer weather. The people receiving the care packages were very appreciative. We hope to do many more feeding the hungry and homeless efforts like this one. May Allah enable us to do so, Ameen.
The Holy Prophet (may peace and blessings of Allah be on him said, “O people, exchange greetings of peace (i.e., say: As-Salamu ‘Alaikum to one another), feed people, strengthen the ties of kinship, and be in prayer when others are asleep, you will enter Jannah in peace” [Tirmidhi].
Many other Majalis hold such Ithar events on a regular basis. Ansar brothers are urged to actively take part in Ithar activities to serve our fellow citizens.
