Dr. Mehdi Ali Qamar
    (1963 - 2014)

Dr. Mehdi Ali Bashiruddin Qamar of Columbus Majlis was martyred in Rabwah, Pakistan on May 26, 2014, at the age of 50, Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji‘un. Dr. Mehdi was gunned down in front of his wife and two-year old son at the gate of Bahishti Maqbarah around Fajr time. He had arrived in Pakistan with his family a couple of days earlier to volunteer at Tahir Heart Institute in Rabwah.

The funeral Prayer of our dear brother Dr. Mehdi Ali Qamar Shaheed was offered on June 3 and June 4, 2014 at Baitul Islam Mosque in Maple, Ontario, Canada and was attended by thousands of members. Friends and family had come to pay their final respects to the Shaheed from North America, Europe, and Pakistan. The burial took place on June 4th at Maple United Cemetery in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V (may Allah be his helper) talked about this endeared and great martyr of Ahmadiyyat at length in his Friday sermon of May 30, 2014, and offered his funeral Prayer in absentia. Funeral Prayers were also offered in Jama’ats across the country. May Allah elevate his status in the highest echelons of paradise (Jannatul Firdaus) and may He be the protector of his family and his generations to come. Amin.

Vaughan Jama‘at arranged a bookstall at a Public library in Lindsay, Ontario. As Missionary Ansar Raza Sahib introduced the Jama‘at to a lady, she inquired whether it was the same community whose doctor was murdered when he went back home to serve his country. This shows how this great martyr is causing the message of Ahmadiyyat—the true Islam—to spread, even after his martyrdom. May Allah bless him abundantly!

My paternal uncle, the late Dr. Mehdi Ali Qamar, was an extremely talented individual. He completed his education in Canada and became a successful Cardiologist in Ohio. He decided to specialize in Cardiology when his mother (my paternal grandmother) Najm un Nisa Begum, passed away due to a heart attack. Dr. Mehdi Ali was so skilled and confident in his profession that he would often take on the most complicated heart surgery cases which other physicians would refuse to handle. Dr. Mehdi would easily and successfully perform such surgeries with his God-given abilities.

He was a wonderful human being with an extreme spirit of service to humanity, especially people in need. Despite living in Ohio and being well-settled there, he would humbly visit Pakistan each summer to volunteer at the Tahir Heart Institute to provide heart patients with a free cure and medication, as well as tools and supplies for the hospitals in Rabwah.

He was a man young at heart and full of life. He would treat his family members and relatives with special love and affection. He once said, "Some people just live, and there are some who live a life." And he lived a life full of devotion and ambition to serve humanity.

Dr. Mehdi was in the process of publishing a book containing marvelous poems he had written. God-willing, the book will be published soon. During this journey of spirit and accomplishments, he sacrificed his life for mankind and Ahmadiyyat. But in this time of great sorrow, I am reminded: "Surely, to Allah we Belong and to Him shall we return" [2:157]. I pray that my uncle's soul rests in peace and that he achieves the highest rank in heaven. Amen.

I was saddened on hearing of the murder of Dr. Mehdi Ali. He was a really great Man. It happened in front of his family's eyes and they must have had felt really shocked and sad for the death of Dr. Mehdi Ali sahib. May Allah always keep his family in His protection. Amen.
